I help parents of struggling readers advocate with confidence so their children can get the reading support they need at school.
I believe every child can learn to read with the right instruction. But I also know that access to that instruction often depends on how informed and empowered a parent feels. When families understand what effective reading instruction looks like and how to ask for it, outcomes change.
As a literacy and dyslexia specialist trained in the Science of Reading, and as the parent of a dyslexic learner, I understand both the professional and personal sides of this journey. I know how overwhelming it can feel to watch your child struggle, hear mixed messages from school, and wonder if you’re doing enough.
That’s why my work focuses on advocacy first. Through evidence-based guidance, step-by-step education, and personalized coaching, I help parents navigate school systems, communicate clearly, and move forward with a plan that actually makes sense.
You don’t have to figure this out on your own. With the right tools and support, you can advocate effectively, and your child can build the confidence and skills they need to become a strong reader.
"My son worked with Michelle, and it was beyond helpful. He was starting 4th grade on a 1st grade reading level. He is now on his grade level."
~Alicia, mom of 9-year-old son
"Michelle welcomed my daughter each day in a way that eased her anxiety and motivated her to learn."
~Monique, mom of 12-year-old daughter
"Our time with Michelle transformed our approach. Reading, spelling, vocabulary, and comprehension
have all improved."
~Gabriel, dad of 14-year-old son
"I highly recommend Michelle as a tutor as it is very rare to find someone with her credentials and demeanor."
~Amanda, mom of 11-year-old daughter
Yes, I offer a complimentary 20-minute consultation to discuss your child’s literacy needs and how I can help support their progress.
My online course is accessible from anywhere with the internet. I also provide 1:1 virtual services to parents and students nationwide.
While tutoring focuses on delivering personalized reading and spelling instruction, parent coaching helps parents advocate for their child’s literacy needs at school. I suggest starting with my video-based online course that will guide parents through understanding their rights and communicating with the school. If you have additional questions or keep getting stonewalled at school I also offer 1:1 parent coaching.
With over 25 years of experience in early education, I hold a graduate degree in Reading Science and a Dyslexia Certificate from Mount St. Joseph University. I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach and certified as a Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist by CERI. Additionally, I serve as an active board member of the International Dyslexia Association, Hawaii Branch.
The first step is a foundational reading assessment to identify your child’s specific needs. This includes two sessions with your child, followed by data analysis and a detailed report to ensure that lessons are customized to meet your child's unique needs.
If the teacher reports no concerns, don’t wait—early intervention is crucial. Request a meeting with your child’s teacher to discuss your concerns. My free parent-teacher guide can help you navigate this conversation and my online course includes scripts, guidance, and email templates to guide you.
Let’s give your child the tools they need to succeed through proven reading instruction and effective school advocacy. By building their reading skills, they’ll gain confidence and prepare for a bright future.
I'm ready to get started
